"BACK LOOP, PORCELAIN BASIN"
The only constant is change in Yellowstone’s numerous thermal areas, and the Back Loop trail of Porcelain Basin is no exception. It is also one of the quieter and less traveled routes in the expansive Norris Geyser Basin, although for one magical June day in 2001, the presence of a grizzly sow and her two cubs managed to keep all visitors from exploring its thermal wonders.

"BLACKFEET COUNTRY"
Horses, a tipi, prairie potholes and glaciated plains frame this view of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation between the town of Browning and Glacier National Park, Montana.

"CEDAR SENTINEL"
There’s something magical and inviting about a cedar grove, and this large Western Red Cedar sentinel appeared to be guarding the entrance to one of my favorite councils of cedars in western Montana.

"CLOUD DANCE"
This was the trippiest cloud display I have ever witnessed in Yellowstone in winter. Originally taken near Yellowstone Lake as a color image, I much prefer how the starkly contrasting and converging clouds appear in black and white format.

"LIVINGSTON RANGE, MONTANA"
The Livingston Range is in the northwest portion of Glacier National Park, and a very long day’s drive from Livingston, Montana. This area, which lies along the North Fork of the Flathead River, is favored as a critical lower elevation travel corridor by large predators such as wolves, mountain lions and grizzly bears, though mining pressures just north of the international boundary in British Columbia have the potential to change that.

"MADISON RANGE, MONTANA"
This late December shot captures the majesty and serenity of the Madison Valley in Montana. Livestock and wildlife easily outnumber the valley’s human residents, and its lack of artificial light at night makes it a prime area for stargazing.

"RAVEN CATCHING OLD FAITHFUL"
This picture was taken on a 45 degrees below zero Fahrenheit morning, yet this raven did not seem to mind the frigid temperatures. After Old Faithful's eruption shifted from its water to its steam phase, the raven scoured the open thermal stream to the left in search of food. It also did a very thorough job picking up crumbs and litter left behind by visitors. It is illegal to litter or feed all wildlife in Yellowstone National Park.

"ROCKY MOUNTAIN FRONT, MONTANA"
Late October weather along Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front can range from clear, warm and windy days, as in this image, to blizzards that dump feet of snow upon the plains and foothills. The Blackfeet Indians view these mountains as sacred, and refer to them as “The Backbone of the World”. Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front is the only area in the Lower 48 states where grizzly bears still roam the plains (when they are not hibernating, that is).

"SODA BUTTE CREEK, YELLOWSTONE"
A footbridge across Soda Butte Creek leads to this view looking east from Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley toward the high peaks of the Absaroka Range. The Lamar Valley and surrounding areas continue to be favored haunts for many of Greater Yellowstone’s wolves, which were successfully reintroduced here and to central Idaho in 1995 and 1996.

"SPECIMEN RIDGE, YELLOWSTONE"
Specimen Ridge is just about my favorite place in Yellowstone, but it’s an especially important hike to be very “bear aware” on. The 8,200 foot ridge is named for petrified redwood and other tree specimens commonly found in this area of the park.

"SPRINGTIME AT BUFFALO JUMP"
The Tobacco Root Mountains loom in the distance in this view from near the top of Buffalo Jump, a Montana state park located between Three Forks and Manhattan. It’s a great place for spring and fall bird watching, and the only place in Montana where I’ve seen sandhill cranes, marmots and rattlesnakes all at the same time!

"SWAN LAKE FLATS, YELLOWSTONE"
An unforgettable view of Swan Lake Flats awaits visitors traveling between Mammoth and Norris in this late spring Yellowstone scene. Electric Peak dominates the still snow-covered Gallatin Range, which runs from north of the
Norris Geyser Basin to just south of Bozeman, Montana.

"THERMAL REFLECTIONS, YELLOWSTONE"
This view is from along the Fairy Falls Trail, not too far from Old Faithful, just before you duck into thick swaths of lodgepole pine trees that have flourished in the aftermath of Yellowstone’s epic 1988 fire season. The thermal feature seen in the image is the back side of Grand Prismatic Spring.

"TREE OF LIFE"
A Wyoming native told me that this photo couldn’t actually have been taken in “The Cowboy State”, because the lone tree wasn’t bowled over by the wind. It’s hard not to be bowled over by Wyoming’s stunning natural beauty, landscapes, and wide-ranging wildlife. Sadly, many such areas have been destroyed-or face destruction-due to unbridled efforts to develop natural gas, coal, coalbed methane, and other non-renewable energy in this natural resource rich state.

"UNTITLED, PORCELAIN BASIN"
Porcelain Basin has some of the most changeable thermal features in the Norris Geyser area of Yellowstone. The colors and patterns here reminded me of an oil spill, and also of chocolate swirl soft ice cream. View the photo upside down for a different perspective.

"WINTER VIEW FROM FISHING BRIDGE"
I worked as a park ranger here in the winter of 2001-02, and the view from this bridge was part of my daily commute. In winter, trumpeter swans and Barrow’s goldeneyes are often present in the Yellowstone River, and hardy herds of bison frequently use the bridge to cross the river.

"AUTUMN MOSAIC"
This image of a thick, nap-inducing bed of maple leaves caught my eye while traveling around the country a while back.  There’s a little bit of nearly every color in the photo, from early fall’s rich purple and red hues, to late summer’s fading greens and yellows.

"GOLDEN ZION"
You can barely make out the snow dusting the higher elevations in this Zion Canyon shot, but the illuminated leaves lining the winding roadway are what really pulled me into this late October scene.

"HELL'S RAINBOWS"
This photo was shot from the Oregon side of the Snake River in Hells Canyon, shortly after a dry thunderstorm had crashed through the area. It had been in the lower 100’s earlier that day, and the rainbows, dark skies and wind provided a brief, cool contrast to the parched hills seen across the river in Idaho.

"JOSHUA’S RAINBOWS"
One of southern California’s true desert gems is Joshua Tree National Park. It had rained hard for two days prior to when this photo was taken. The rewards for staying put included a reprieve from the region’s smog, the pungent smell of wet, desert vegetation, brilliant night skies, and this image of double rainbows blessing the knoll behind my campsite once the rains finally ended.
