"After the Storm"
This image was taken from Peets Hill (a.k.a. Burke Park) in Bozeman, looking west toward a potentially heavy-duty thunderstorm that never really materialized. The late evening sun re-emerging behind dark, fast-moving clouds made for an exciting contrast to capture in the moment, and share.

Ordering Information

"AUTUMN GOLD"
Sagebrush, native grasses and willows give way to aspens and conifers at higher elevations in Yellowstone National Park’s Northern Range, which provides critical winter habitat to elk, bison, and other ungulates. Autumn is superb for visiting this and other parts of Yellowstone, due to fewer visitors, cooler, usually drier weather, and both predators and prey species very much on the move.

Steep rising walls in Montana’s backcountry seemingly touch the clouds in this image, in contrast to boulders left behind by receding glaciers gracing the meadow below.

"BISON PARADISE"
Taken just west of the Slough Creek campground road and looking north, this is one of my favorite Yellowstone vistas. Rich, deep autumn colors, grazing bison with their dark winter coats, and a warm, sunny fall afternoon all combine to make this an indelible image (As a large, signed print, it makes an awesome gift for Yellowstone and other nature lovers!).

"FIRST LIGHT"
This 35mm color film image was taken in low light conditions near Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone. Steam escaping from nearby Canary Springs rapidly melted snow that had fallen the night before, creating this ethereal, peaceful scene. It looks awesome as a large format, signed print, too!

"HIGH COUNTRY SUMMER"
Montana’s high country is often snow-covered from October until July, allowing just a brief warm window for experiencing inspiring summer scenery, including ephemeral streams, waterfalls, and abundant wildflowers. Plan ahead and be prepared for snow and cold, though, even in summer!

"VIEW FROM THE TOP"
From Mount Blackmore’s summit (elevation 10, 154’) in the Gallatin Range south of Bozeman, other Montana mountain ranges loom in the distance in this expansive October image. Blackmore and other northern Gallatin Range trailheads can be reached via Hyalite Canyon just outside of Bozeman.

"YELLOWSTONE AUTUMN"
One of my all-time favorite images, this photo offers a vertical perspective of “Bison Paradise”, and was taken just west of the Slough Creek campground road on Yellowstone’s Northern Range. The way golden aspens and autumn-tinted grasses yield to a free-ranging bison herd under sunny skies epitomizes this part of the park, and evokes many wonderful memories from serving as an interpretive park ranger and naturalist guide there.

"AWAITING WINTER"
This photo was taken not far from Grand Cache, Alberta, Canada one mid-September. I love the movement and mood captured in the windblown, autumn-tinted grasses and trees, in contrast to winter’s slow but certain return and advance from nearby peaks to the valley floor below.

"INTO THE WILD"
This image evokes the wildness of the North Fork of the Flathead River in northwest Montana, although it was taken considerably farther north, near the Yukon-British Columbia boundary. Wild, unbroken country stretches nearly contiguously from Yellowstone to Yukon, yet road building, mining, railroad construction, non-renewable energy and other development pressures threaten the lives and livelihood of this remote region’s wild and human inhabitants.

"NORTH FORK OF FLATHEAD"
Offering a different perspective from the view depicted in “Livingston Range, Montana”, this image highlights long autumn shadows cast across a golden meadow, lingering, low-lying storm clouds racing over the Livingston Range, and distant peaks straddling Glacier National Park’s boundary with Canada. One of my best sellers as a card and a large print!

"CENTENNIAL VALLEY, MONTANA"
This early July image looks north across the Centennial Valley toward southwest Montana’s Gravelly Range. Part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Centennial Valley provides critical habitat and travel corridors for predator and prey species alike. In summer, look for moose, and you should have no problems with mosquitoes finding you!

"LEWIS AND CLARK PASS"
Meriwether Lewis traveled through here in 1806, following a route the Nez Perce tribe recommended as an easy-to-find, well-traveled way to buffalo hunting grounds, the Missouri River and points east. The pass can be reached via a U.S. Forest Service road and trailhead in the Alice Creek drainage off of U.S. Highway 200 between Rogers Pass and Lincoln, Montana.

"LOWER FALLS IN MAY"
This view of the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River is from Artist Point on the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone’s South Rim, but many other perspectives await from nearby hiking trails and viewpoints on both sides of the canyon. In summer, look for soaring ravens, zooming violet-green swallows, and ospreys raising their young from nests atop pinnacles, but also watch your step, as drop-offs are unforgiving in this steep, rugged area of Yellowstone.

"PEACE BARN"
Peace symbols abound in Big Sky Country, inspired in part by early efforts of Montana native Jeannette Rankin (1890-1973). America’s first elected congresswoman, Rankin voted against U.S. entry into both World War I and II, and marched for peace during the Vietnam War. "PEAKS TO PRAIRIE"
This view was taken from Lewis and Clark Pass not far from Lincoln, Montana, looking east across the Continental Divide. Within a short distance of this pass, habitats shift from high-country harboring whitebark pine trees, grizzly bears and pikas to grasslands once teeming with herds of wild, free-ranging bison.

"ROAD TO THE BUFFALO TRAIL"
The Nez Perce called the area near Lewis and Clark Pass “The Road to the Buffalo Trail”, although Crow, Blackfeet, Salish, Kootenai and other tribes also crossed over the mountains here to hunt bison on the plains. Tread lightly and respectfully in this unique, well-preserved landscape, which has changed very little since North America’s earliest human inhabitants first started using the area over 10,000 years ago.

"ROBBERS ROOST, MADISON VALLEY"
Also known as Revenue Flats, this remote area was once a rugged hide-out for bandits during mining’s heyday in Montana’s Virginia and Nevada cities. Today it is more popular with mountain bikers and rock climbers from Bozeman and beyond, but watch for rattlesnakes!

"GARNET GHOST TOWN"
Boom and bust mining operations and their aftermaths go hand-in-hand with Montana’s relatively short settlement history, as is the case with Garnet Ghost Town, a once thriving gold mining settlement of 1,000 inhabitants toward the close of the 19th century. The Bureau of Land Management operates a visitor center and self-guided interpretive trails during the summer months at Garnet, the best preserved and least commercialized ghost town in Big Sky Country, and adventurous folks can ski or snowmobile there during the winter months. "HARD TIMES"
Many well-preserved and not-so-well-preserved buildings grace the landscape at Garnet Ghost Town in western Montana, with discoveries and surprises awaiting in nearly every dwelling. I loved this particular structure’s indoor run-down state, with sunlight streaming in through gaps in the logs, most of an old stove precariously still standing, and the stove top’s brand plate, “Economy”, sitting on the dusty, dirt floor.

"GRINNELL GLACIER, 2010"
One of Glacier National Park’s remaining yet rapidly disappearing two dozen or so active glaciers, Grinnell is also one of the park’s most accessible, from the Swiftcurrent Lake/Many Glacier area on the park’s eastern side. Start early to make the most of this 12-mile, moderately strenuous round-trip hike, and be very bear aware…

"GRINNELL’S GHOST, 2010"
In the 1850s, Grinnell Glacier covered more than 700 acres and was over 1,000 feet thick, but today has dwindled to less than 150 acres. In 1850 the ecosystem had over 150 named glaciers, but today only 35 remain, 25 of which are considered active. At the current rate of climate change, all of the park’s remaining glaciers will vanish by 2030, hence this image’s title.

"SAINT MARY LAKE, GLACIER N.P."
I’ve been to Glacier National Park off and on since 1992, but it wasn’t until 2009 that I was fortunate enough to capture the exceptional contrast in colors at different depths of this pristine, 10-mile long lake. Up to 300’ deep, Saint Mary Lake has a lengthy shoreline, hiking trails and waterfalls to explore, summer boat tours, and excellent wildlife viewing potential, especially during the fall elk rut, and during elk calving in late spring.

"SEXTON GLACIER, 2010"
This glacier’s a jaunt to get to, via either a trail near Siyeh Bend off Going-to-the-Sun Road, or from an even steeper and longer trail starting near Sunrift Gorge. No matter your route, you’ll likely experience epic, unforgettable scenery, a chance to see mountain goats, pikas, marmots, and both grizzly and black bears, and up-close views of this retreating glacier, which has lost over 30% of its surface area since the mid-1960s.

"MORRELL FALLS"
This beautiful 90’ high waterfall makes for a popular, relatively flat 5-mile round trip hike from a trailhead close to Seeley Lake, Montana. I was most fortunate to have had the falls to myself for half an hour one late July day, yet the falls are even more spectacular and stunning during peak snowmelt and run-off in early summer.

"ALASKA RANGE AT DUSK"
This early September image was taken west of the Wonder Lake campground in Denali National Park. After three days of nearly non-stop rain, I experienced one magical day and evening with Denali, North America’s highest peak, in full view. Later that same evening, huge flocks of sandhill cranes gathered and chortled before heading south for more hospitable winter climes.
